Agoura Hills is an affluent city at the far west end of Los Angeles County adjacent to Ventura County. It is known as "the gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains". The population was 20,330 at the 2010 census. Agoura Hills is located within the Conejo Valley adjacent to Malibu, Calabasas, Old Agoura, Westlake Village, and Oak Park. The city is immediately north of the Santa Monica Mountains, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, and several other state parks. The Cheseboro Canyon and Palo Comado Canyon and Upper Las Virgenes Canyon - Ahmanson Ranch are just east of Agoura Hills. Hidden Hills is 10 miles to the northeast. Lake Sherwood is 7 miles to the southwest. Much of the area consists of rolling hills and open space. Protecting the environment and preserving open space has been a major priority for the city. The Las Virgenes Unified School District is considered to be one of the best in the United States and the city is constantly ranked as one of the safest cities in the United States for cities of its size.

 

Agoura Hills - Districts

Agoura Hills is officially divided into the following districts: Downtown, East Agoura, Forest Cove, Historic Quarter, Lake Lindero, Midtown, Morrison Estates, Morrison Ranch Estates, North Village, Reyes Adobe, South End, Upper Downtown, West Office District, and Whizin's Row.

 

Picture City

The area that is currently Agoura Hills and the unincorporated area of Agoura were known as Picture City after Paramount Studios purchased a large, local ranch in the early 1920s to be used in making movies. The ranch, known as Paramount Ranch, is located within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area just south of Agoura Hills and north of Malibu. The name Picture City was officially changed to Agoura in 1928. In 1982, the city of Agoura Hills was incorporated. The adjacent unincorporated area is known as Old Agoura or Agoura.

 

 

Agoura Hills Recreation & Event Center

The Agoura Hills Recreation & Event Center is the city of Agoura Hills' premier event facility designed to serve the community by offering a venue for private special events such as weddings, conferences, meetings, family reunions, birthday parties, and more. It includes a catering kitchen, an outdoor patio, and great views of the Santa Monica Mountains, Agoura Hills, and other areas of the Conejo Valley. Information can be obtained from the city. The Agoura Hills Recreation and Event Center is located adjacent to the library and city offices located at 29900 Ladyface Court.

 

 

Ladyface Mountain

Ladyface Mountain is the highest peak in Agoura Hills reaching 2,031 feet. The trailhead to the peak is located on Kanan Road approximately one mile south of the Ventura Freeway. The peak is visible from all of Agoura Hills, and parts of Oak Park and Westlake Village. Ladyface Mountain is part of the Santa Monica Mountains.

 

 

Agoura Hills - Calabasas Community Center

The Agoura Hills - Calabasas Community Center is a 30,000 square foot recreational facility developed as a joint venture by the cities of Agoura Hills and Calabasas. It includes extensive fitness facilities and a large banquet hall for special events and rentals. The community center offers a variety of recreational, social, cultural, and educational programs and activities to meet the needs of the community.

 

Ballard Mountain

Agoura Hills has a 2,031 foot mountain called Ballard Mountain, named after John Ballard who was a former slave and early pioneer from Kentucky. Ballard first came to the area in 1859. He was able to move his family to 320 acres of land he and his family acquired near Seminole Hot Springs, just south of Agoura Hills in 1880. Ballard Mountain is in the Santa Monica Mountains in western Los Angeles County.

 

Malibu Junction - Agoura Hills

Malibu Junction in Agoura Hills, also known as "Whizin's Row", is a historic commercial district located at the south end of Agoura Hills between the Santa Monica Mountains and Simi Hills. Whizin's Row, or "Whizin's", built in 1968, was originally a traveler's stop located in what was a very remote area along Route 101 which is the main route between Los Angeles and northern California. Malibu Junction is well known for its many antique shops.

 

Chumash Park

Chumash Park is a 16 acre park located in central Agoura Hills and owned by the city of Agoura Hills. Chumash Park has a softball diamond, multipurpose sports fields, a children's playground, extensive picnic areas, and lots of shade trees and open space. Each year, the city hosts Summer Concerts in the park where families come to enjoy an evening of food, activities, good music, and an opportunity to meet their neighbors. Chumash Park is named after the Chumash People who inhabited Agoura Hills and much of Southern California for thousands of years before the Spanish claimed the area. The Chumash Museum and Interpretive Center is located in Thousand Oaks just west of Agoura Hills.

Chumash Park is used to host sports leagues for both children and adults utilizing its softball diamonds and multipurpose sports fields. Chumash Park in Agoura Hills should not be confused with Chumash Park in Ventura or Chumash Park in Simi Valley.

 

Forest Cove Park

Forest Cove Park is a neighborhood park in the city of Agoura Hills. The park features a baseball field, basketball court, lots of picnic tables, barbeques, two children's play areas, restrooms, and plenty of trees and open space. It also offers a great view of Ladyface Mountain.

 

Morrison Park

Morrison Park is a neighborhood park within the Morrison Ranch Estates community in the city of Agoura Hills. The park features covered picnic areas, barbeques, a children's play area, restrooms, a full outdoor basketball court, plenty of open space, and a great view of Ladyface Mountain.

 

Sumac Park

Sumac Park is a small neighborhood park in the Fountainwood community of Agoura Hills. The park includes picnic tables, a children's play area, restrooms, shade trees, and lots of open space.

 

Lake Lindero

Lake Lindero is a man-made lake in Agoura Hills that was created when the Lake Lindero community of homes was developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The lake is surrounded by single family detached homes and is maintained by the Lake Lindero Homeowners Association.

 

Lindero Country Club

Lindero Country Club is a 9 acre public golf course on the west end of Agoura Hills, adjacent to Westlake Village. It was designed by architect Ted Robinson and built in 1967. The club offers tennis courts, banquet facilities, meeting rooms, and a restaurant.

 

John W. Morrison Ranch House

The John W. Morrison Ranch House was built in the late 1800s and is located in Old Agoura within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in lower Cheseboro Canyon. The ranch house, which has been used for many movies over the years, is in the process of being repaired by the National Park Service and local volunteers. The Morrison Ranch Estates development in Agoura Hills was named after the historic John W. Morrison Ranch House.

 

Rancho Las Virgenes

Rancho Las Virgenes was the 17,760 acre Spanish land grant given in 1802 that included present day Oak Park, Agoura Hills, part of Westlake Village, and a portion of the Simi Hills and Santa Monica Mountains. The Reyes Adobe, a historical site, built in 1845, is located in Agoura Hills. It is the oldest structure remaining in the Rancho Las Virgenes.

 

Reyes Adobe Historical Site

Reyes Adobe Days - Agoura Hills

The Reyes Adobe Historical Site features an early California adobe rancho built by the Reyes family in 1845 whose legacy dates back to the Portola expedition. The site includes a museum with many historical artifacts and displays. In October of each year, the city of Agoura Hills hosts an annual celebration, called "Reyes Adobe Days", showcasing the historical site with numerous cultural events, art, food, live entertainment, and a parade.

Tours of the site are available through the city. The Reyes Adobe Park is adjacent to the historical site offering picnic tables, restrooms, and a children's play area.

 

The Great Race of Agoura Hills

The Great Race of Agoura was established in 1986 by a group of local parents to raise money for local elementary schools. The annual event is now one of the largest running events in the Los Angeles County - Ventura County area and continues to donate money to several schools in Agoura Hills and adjacent Oak Park. Sponsors include the city of Agoura Hills and many local businesses. The race starts and finishes at Chumash Park.

 

Summer Concerts at the Park

Each summer the city of Agoura Hills and local businesses sponsor a series of concerts in the park at Chumash Park in Agoura Hills. After the show closest to the Fourth of July, a fireworks show follows the concert. The concerts are great family fun and an opportunity to meet neighbors.

 

Agoura High School Tennis Center

Agoura High School has nine lighted public tennis courts available. The courts are located at 28795 Driver Avenue in Agoura Hills.

 

Agoura Hills Library

The Agoura Hills Library is a 17,722 square foot library operated by the County of Los Angeles Public Library. It includes a children's area, teen area, and individual study rooms.

 

Agoura Hills Peak

Agoura Hills Peak is the unofficial name for a hill in Agoura Hills that rises to 1,219 feet. The hill is located south of Thousand Oaks Boulevard, north of the Ventura 101 Freeway, and just east of Forest Cove Lane. A trail leads to the top of the peak. Views include Agoura Hills, Old Agoura, parts of Oak Park and Westlake Village, and the Santa Monica Mountains including Ladyface Mountain. It is worth the climb as the views are quite spectacular.

 

Mount Estrella - Agoura Hills
Chief White Eagle

Mount Estrella is a hill on the southern slope of the Santa Monica Mountains in Agoura Hills and the site of a 14 foot tall, 13 ton statue of an Indian named Chief White Eagle. The statue was unveiled in 1940 and has become a landmark. Although the city of Agoura Hills has an easement to the famous statue, it is located on private property and overlooks much of Agoura Hills and Old Agoura. The statue was created by Jean de Strelecki who came to Agoura in the late 1930s. It was erected to honor the Chumash Indians who lived in the area long before California was claimed by Spain and later by Mexico.

 

Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce

The Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce, established in 1939, has more than 900 members and serves the communities of Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Oak Park, and Newbury Park. In addition, the chamber has members from Woodland Hills, Camarillo, Ventura, Moorpark, Calabasas, Simi Valley, and many other surrounding communities.

 

Agoura Hills Senior Recreation Program

The city of Agoura Hills provides a senior recreation program for adults age 55 or more at its Recreation Center on Thousand Oaks Boulevard. The program offers fitness classes, social activities, classes, and other events.

 

Calamigos Ranch

Calamigos Ranch is a beautiful 130 acre privately owned ranch, that includes a lake and waterfall. It is located in the Santa Monica Mountains. The ranch has been available for private use since 1947 for weddings, banquets, conferences, company picnics, and other events. Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, and Rocky Oaks Park are to the north, Malibu and the Pacific Ocean are directly south. Malibu Creek State Park is to the east.

 

Camp Agoura Hills

Every summer the city of Agoura Hills sponsors Camp Agoura Hills for children in the following age groups: 3-5, 5-11, 6-12, and up to age 16 for certain specialty camps. Information on the various day camps can be obtained from the city.

Vasa Park

Vasa Park is a 24 - acre private park in Agoura Hills, located just west of Cornell and Seminole Springs and north of Malibu. The park is owned by The Vasa Park Association which consists of 7 lodges organized in 1936. The non-profit organization is made up of people originally from Scandinavia. It operates a Viking Village Youth Camp and various recreational events each year. The park is located at 2854 Triunfo Canyon Road which is south of the Ventura (101) Freeway and west of Kanan Road. The beautiful park features a water slide, swimming pool, a small lake, and a stream. Horse trails are located in the surrounding Santa Monica Mountains. The private park can be rented.

 

Agoura Children's Theatre

Agoura Children's Theatre, established in 1980, offers improvisational classes, summer acting camps, excellent performances, and more. Classes are small and space is limited. The theater and school is located at 28240 Agoura Road, Suite 202 just east of the Agoura Hills Civic Center and Library.

 

Las Virgenes - Malibu
Council of Governments

The Las Virgenes - Malibu Council of Governments (COG) is comprised of the cities of Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Malibu, and Westlake Village. COG was established by its members to provide a vehicle for members to engage in regional and cooperative planning and coordination of government services and responsibilities. The members from the five cities meet monthly.

 

Pierre Agoura
Founder of Agoura

The founder of Agoura was Pierre Agoura, a French Basque immigrant who settled in the area in 1871. He styled himself as Don Pierre Agoure. His name was selected for the first post office, but the name was slightly changed. The City of Agoura Hills was incorporated in 1982, but the remaining areas, which are in Los Angeles County, continue to be identified as Agoura or unincorporated Agoura. Agoura was a part of the Rancho Las Virgenes, a 17,760 acre Spanish land grant in the Santa Monica Mountains and Simi Hills.

 

Canyon Club - Agoura Hills

Agoura Hills in the Conejo Valley is home to the Canyon Club which is a local venue for concerts and other events. The club is located in the Whizin's Center at the foot of Ladyface Mountain which is part of the Santa Monica Mountains.

 

Joni and Friends International Disability Center

Joni and Friends, founded in 1979, is headquartered in Agoura Hills, California. The organization is a Christian ministry that reaches out to the disabled community locally in the Conejo Valley and around the world. Programs offered include a daily five-minute radio program heard in over 1,000 markets, educational opportunities for entire families, retreats for families who live with disability, and much more. The ministry of Joni and Friends is made possible through the generosity of donations. Joni and Friends is located at 30009 Ladyface Court in Agoura Hills near the Agoura Hills Civic Center and Library, Old - Agoura - Unincorporated Agoura Agoura, or Old Agoura as it is commonly called, is the unincorporated area of Los Angeles County located between the city of Agoura Hills and Calabasas. It is part of the Conejo Valley. Some of the land is zoned for horses. The area was once known as Picture City due to its proximity to the Paramount Movie Ranch. Cheseboro Canyon and Palo Comado Canyon and Upper Las Virgenes Canyon - Ahmanson Ranch are immediately to the east of Old Agoura.

 

Old Agoura Park

Old Agoura Park is located at the intersection of Chesebro Road and Driver Avenue north of the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills. It has an equestrian warm-up arena and trails that connect to Chesebro Canyon, Palos Camado Canyon, and the Santa Monica Mountain trails south of the 101 Freeway. The park also has a baseball field and children's play area.

 

John W. Morrison Ranch House

Agoura - Woodland Hills Pony Club

The Agoura-Woodland Hills Pony Club (AWHPC) is a charter member of the United States Pony Club, a non-profit organization. The club teaches horsemanship and the care of horses to young people through the age of 21. The AWHPC is located in the unincorporated community of Agoura which is between Agoura Hills and Calabasas, just west of Woodland Hills and the San Fernando Valley. The facilities are on 2 acres of land and include 30 stalls, 2 dressage rings, an enclosed jumping arena, a cross-country course, and direct access to adjacent public parkland that extends for miles.
